The year was 1980, when Penelope Cartier made the decision to enlist into the Army. She lived somewhat a closeted life during her college days so she felt it wouldn't be any different in the military, but she was so wrong. Penelope endured years of sexual and verbal harassment with threats of physical abuse because she was a lesbian.

Here is her story of living a secret life and the struggles she and many endured as lesbians serving in the military before the ban was lifted to service openly. Thousands of military women lived a secret love life and were forced to stay in the closet. Over half of them today suffer from PTSD with military sexual trauma. Many had substance abuse problems, which has led to major health issues. Some have taken their lives. I am speaking and sharing their stories.
